Can one be a fascist, yet still believe in freedom of religion?

It is my understanding that fascism seeks to unite a country on all levels. It was derived from the theory of Nationalism. Fascists seek to have the public united into the best of the best, striving to build up the country by serving the community, not the individual. The Fascists do not support the role of the individual, so therefore they would choose to disband religion, correct? However, Mussolini of Fascist Italy during WWII supported the Roman Catholic Church. I am not certain as to what the Neo-Fascists believe when in comes to religion. I know not all Fascists are religious, yet not all are atheistic. So how can one be an atheist and believe in freedom of religion? This is just a curiosity of mine.
